What is NSFAS?
The
National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a government initiative under the Department of Higher Education and Training. It provides financial support to disadvantaged students who want to study at
public universities or
TVET colleges.
NSFAS has introduced a new and improved system that ensures
each application is carefully reviewed to give all applicants a fair opportunity.

Who Qualifies for NSFAS Funding?
To be eligible, you must meet the following criteria:
South African citizen
SASSA grant recipient (automatic qualification)

Combined household income
not exceeding R350,000 per year

If you have a
disability, the combined household income must not exceed
R600,000 per year

Students who started studying
before 2018 must have a household income
not exceeding R122,000 per year
What Documents Are Required?
For students with employed parents:
- Your ID copy
- Both parents' IDs
- Payslips of both parents
- Signed consent form for income verification
For students whose parents are unemployed:
- Your ID copy
- Signed consent form (No payslips required)
NSFAS Bursary Conditions

If you're
already funded by NSFAS, you
don’t need to reapply as long as you meet the
50% pass requirement

NSFAS has
paid over R1.2 billion to institutions and students

More NSFAS officials will be deployed to institutions to
assist students with applications

A
signed consent form is compulsory—without it, NSFAS
cannot verify income, and your funding application may be
declined.
